Ghana Wood Tracking System (GWTS)

Forestry Commission of Ghana

Axon Information Systems has a proven track record in developing and deploying cutting-edge SaaS solutions tailored to the unique requirements of diverse industries. Among these, one of the standout solutions is the Ghana Wood Tracking System (GWTS). This solution was developed for the Ghana Forestry Commission (FC) and plays an instrumental role in managing and administrating the country's timber resources.

It serves as a central database application with a mobile app extension and can accommodate up to 700 users, enabling 500 concurrent users to access the system across 75 offices simultaneously. The platform's architecture is built on Jade and Android Java, with a Sync Server written in Ruby.

System Overview

The GWTS is an electronic Timber Legality and Wood Tracking System, widely used across Ghana's timber-producing regions, processing facilities, relevant decentralized administration offices, and export points. Its primary role is to support FC staff, forest managers, mill owners, and wood product exporters in capturing and managing data in real-time.

The platform is a comprehensive suite of system modules, designed to incorporate the diverse activities of all stakeholders in the timber industry. These stakeholders select the modules most suitable for their business, thereby creating a highly customizable and versatile tool.

Central Database Application

At the core of the GWTS is the central database application installed at the FC data centre in Accra. This robust tool manages all timber administration processes and is designed to accommodate various user categories. It facilitates access over the internet through customized client-server applications.

The FC has invested in connecting all their offices via a high-speed Wide Area Network (WAN) and installing Local Area Networks (LAN) at each of their 75 offices. This connectivity infrastructure supports seamless and efficient access to the GWTS across the country.

Access Modes

To ensure maximum accessibility, Axon Information Systems developed the GWTS to be available in two modes - through a thin client application and standalone applications. The thin client application provides registered users with controlled access to the GWTS, with the option to update data in real-time. The standalone applications, on the other hand, allow offline data loading, which can then be uploaded and sent to the FC either by email or delivered by hand to an FC office.

Mobile Applications

A key component of the GWTS is the mobile applications designed for field data entry. These applications enable FC staff to capture field inventory data, log transportation records, log and processed wood stock information, and timber export information onsite. The data is then verified against the records in the central database, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

System Functionality

The GWTS database application supports all administrative and operational functions, including a number of mobile applications developed for specific operational functions. These include mobile system security and access management, recording forest tree stock, recording harvesting and transport from natural forest, and recording harvesting and transport from plantation forest.

In conclusion, Axon Information Systems' GWTS solution is a comprehensive and versatile tool designed to streamline the management and administration of Ghana's timber resources. The innovative application of technology, combined with a deep understanding of the industry's needs, has resulted in a platform that delivers efficient, reliable, and accessible solutions for all stakeholders in the timber industry.
